Androgen Definition
What Are Androgens?

General term for any male sex hormone in vertebrates. An androgenic hormone is a male (masculinizing) hormone. Androgen is associated with size and strength gains. Androgens are the group of male sex hormones, especially testosterone. They are involved in developing and maintaining certain male sexual characteristics. Androgens are the class of steroid hormones play a major role in the development and maintenance of masculine secondary sexual characters, for example, the seminal vesicle and prostate gland of the male mammal, and the comb, wattles, and spur of the male fowl. Androgens are produced in the testis, ovary, adrenal, and most likely, in the placenta. They also influence certain other secondary sexual characters, such as hair growth pattern and voice quality in humans. Androgens affect nitrogen metabolism (anabolic) also. A small portion of the androgen is from corticoids, or adrenal cortex steroids.
