Vitamin D Definition
What Is Vitamin D?

Any or all of several vitamins that are needed for normal bone and tooth structure and are found especially in fish-liver oils, egg yolk, and milk or are produced by the body in response to ultraviolet light. It is fat-soluble vitamin containing a number of distinct chemicals that enhance the absorption of calcium and phosphorus from the intestine and, with parathyroid hormone, mobilizes their deposition in bones. Vitamin D is relatively stable when exposed to heat and light. It is stored in the liver and, to a lesser extent, in the fatty tissue in the skin. Vitamin D deficiency causes a loss of muscle tone, restlessness, and irritability. It also causes rickets in children, and demineralization and softening of the bones (osteomalacia) in adults. Vitamin D supplements have been used to treat osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
